BRUSSELS: Youth America Grand Prix European semi-finals were held in Brussels this December and the runaway winner of the highest award, the Grand Prix, was Cesar Corrales. The 18 year old Cuban, based in Norway, was chosen on the strength of both his classical and contemporary performances.
Cesar offered two classical variations: a blistering Don Quixote and a buoyant James in La Sylphide then clinching the award with Re-enter, the most exciting contemporary solo of the competition.
At ballet competitions contemporary solos are a very mixed bag. Most often they are a weak attempt at neo-classical and rarely give the competitor the opportunity to show any contrast in movement. But Re-enter choreographed by Kaloyan Boyadjief of the Norwegian National Ballet was in a class of its own offering both virtuosity and expression delivered in a passionate display that had the audience cheering.
Cesar Corrales now goes on to compete against some of the world’s best young dancers at the YAGP Finals in New York in April 2014.
